Visuddha: The Power of Speaking Up
I often joke that half the problems in this world could be solved by speaking up, and yes, sometimes communication also creates half the problems (just kidding). Over time, however, I have come to realize the power of simply being expressive. Whether in personal life or professional settings, communication makes a world of difference.
I like to call this idea Visuddha. It is the throat chakra, the center of expression. To me, it represents honesty, clarity, and the courage to put words to what we feel. Sometimes communication is as simple as asking for help, seeking clarity, or respectfully stating what is on our mind.
One moment from my clinical experience really drove this lesson home.
We once had a patient who came to the hospital with worsening symptoms after having delayed treatment for quite some time. He had been getting treatment in a lot of places and overseas as well. While reviewing the case, we tried to track down the results of a biopsy that had been done earlier. After several calls, we learned something surprising. The biopsy sample had never reached the lab.
In some settings, families are asked to carry samples themselves to the pathology lab. In this situation, there had been a misunderstanding. What was meant to be a specimen in a preserving solution was mistaken for medication. The patient used it, felt discomfort, and stopped. As a result, the diagnosis and treatment were delayed for months.
When we pieced the story together, I felt a chill run down my spine. A simple gap in communication had led to such a serious consequence.
That day taught me an unforgettable lesson. Clarity matters. We cannot assume our patients understand what we mean unless we explain things in the simplest, most specific way possible. And just as importantly, patients should feel comfortable enough to ask questions without hesitation or fear.
So, whether it is medicine, relationships, or everyday life, here is what I have learned.
Communicate. And then communicate some more.
